Global warming can result in many serious alterations to the environment, whereas one million species may go extinct by end of the century from human-driven climate change. Rising sea level and global warming are threatening sea turtles and other marine life. To raise the awareness of this issue, Division of Community and International Networking (DCInterNet) is collaborating with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu to jointly organise a webinar titled “Nurturing Turtle, Connecting People” under the UTAR Popular Science Webinar Series.

Date: 29th March 2022 (Tuesday)
Time: 3pm to 4pm (KUL, Malaysia time)
Platform: Zoom
Speaker: Dr Mohd Uzair Rusli (Team Leader of Sea Turtle Research Unit (SEATRU), Institute of Oceanography and Environment, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu)

UTAR are honoured to invite Dr Mohd Uzair Rusli from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) to share with us about his journey of turtle conservation and research at the Chagar Hutang Turtle Sanctuary in the South China Sea.

Dr Mohd Uzair and his team combined lab-based experimental studies with fieldwork, and took an integrative approach that utilises ecological, behavioural, and physiological methodologies. In the field they utilised remote sensing technology (acoustic and satellite telemetry, archival tags) to investigate the movement patterns and behaviour of predatory animals, such as monitoring lizards and black tip reef shark in relation to environmental conditions.

The webinar will give an overview of sea turtle hatchlings during their nest escaping process, and also will tell us how prey-predator relationship is maintained at our sea turtle research station, enabling better conservation practices.
